1. Search Engine Optimisation Tips

So, here we are in February and recently we have been taking a lot of calls about Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), so I thought it would be a good idea to shed some light on SEO by explaining what is it, what it can do for you and how you can help yourself. SEO if done properly requires hard work and plenty of elbow grease! There are NO quick fixes and NO Guarantees!

In a nut shell SEO is the process thats seeks to improve the number and quality of visitors to a web site from search engines. In this edition I want to discuss the importance of text on your website. I provide practical advice that you can do yourself or if you are thinking about hiring an SEO company, you have the ammunition you need to ask the right questions when deciding who to choose.

Content is key! Search engines visit your site automatically with what is called a “spider”. A “spider” scans your website and is programmed to recognise certain textual content called “keywords”. “Spiders” cannot recognise text used in images, so it is best were possible to substitute images for text. When is comes to writing your content, you have to be cleaver, you need to write content that someone may use when searching for your site, so your content needs to be relevant.

A colleague of mine, was working on increasing a label companies sales and he found that instead of using “label” as a keyword, he got a better response from using the keyword “stickers”, as this was the keyword the label companies’ customers were searching on!

It is all well and good, reeling off generic single phase keywords like plumbing, painting and decorating etc, which will be very difficult in getting high listings in search engines, you should try phrases that your customers might use like, London 24 hour plumber. The phase “plumber” was searched for in the month of December 2006 on the overture network, 328407 times whereas the phase “London 24 hour plumber”, was searched for 85 times, although the search term is lower, it is more targeted and intern more relevant to your business and more likely to list your site high.
